Dinghy Instructor

Our very popular 5-day Dinghy Instructor course teaches you the RYA method, the structure of the RYA and how to teach sailing. The course is run by a RYA Coach Assessor and is moderated on the final day by a second RYA Coach Assessor.

The course is for competent, experienced sailors who already hold the RYA Pre-Entry Sailing Assessment, RYA Powerboat Level 2 and First Aid

Dinghy Instructor Preparation

During the instructor preparation course you will be covering advanced sailing and the skills required for pre-entry assessment on the water and upgrading your theory and background knowledge off the water. The emphasis of the week is on getting you prepared for both the Instructor course and the Pre-Entry Assessment.

 

The week will conclude on the Friday with the pre-entry assessment.

This course is aimed specifically at candidates looking to progress to RYA Dinghy Instructor level who already hold the RYA advanced sailing modules

Dinghy Pre-Entry Sailing Assessment Training

Sailing skills such as man overboard, sailing tight circles, sailing a triangular course and sailing a follow-my-leader course will be assessed to advanced sailing level technique. Successful completion will enable the student to join the Instructor course. Held over two days, we offer the first day as a training day to brush up on skills and familiarise yourself with the equipment and sailing area in preparation for the assessment on the second day.

This course is designed to take the competent, experienced sailor who already holds the RYA advanced sailing modules or is at that level, through the Pre-Entry Sailing Assessment which is required for the Dinghy Instructor course

Dinghy Pre-Entry Sailing Assessment

Sailing skills such as man overboard, sailing tight circles, sailing a triangular course and sailing a follow-my-leader course will be assessed to advanced sailing level technique. Successful completion will enable the student to join the Instructor course. It is important that you satisfy yourself that you can sail to the required standard.

The assessment is for competent, experienced sailors who already hold the RYA advanced sailing modules or are at that level

Powerboat Level 2

Our 2-day Powerboat Level 2 course includes basic seamanship skills such as handling the boat safely under power in a variety of conditions and you will spend time practising manoeuvres such as coming alongside and man overboard. Some high speed work will also be undertaken, generally outside the harbour. Completion of the RYA Level 2 course will enable you to apply for the International Certificate of Competence, which is a necessity for boating abroad. Powerboat Level 2 is a requirement for all RYA Instructor courses and for rescue boat duty at most sailing clubs.

You should be at least 16 years of age with experience of driving powerboats to RYA Level 1 standard

Course Pre-Requisites: RYA Powerboat Level 1 or equivalent powerboat experience, min age 16yrs

Powerboat Level 2 Assessment

Experienced powerboat drivers can simply attend on the second day of the Powerboat Level 2 course for the assessment only. Completion of the RYA Level 2 course will enable you to apply for the International Certificate of Competence, which is a necessity for boating abroad. Powerboat Level 2 is a requirement for all RYA Instructor courses and for rescue boat duty at most sailing clubs.

You should be at least 16 years of age with experience of driving powerboats to RYA Level 1 standard

First Aid

The principles of first aid with the emphasis on working in a water-based environment. Valid for 3 years and recognised for all RYA Instructor qualifications.

Safety Boat

This course trains competent powerboat drivers in fleet rescue and the techniques required when rescuing small craft. It is useful for those wishing to assist with rescue cover at their sailing club and is also a pre-requisite for the RYA Senior Instructor course.

You should be at least 18 years of age with experience of driving powerboats to RYA Level 2 standard

Dinghy Senior Instructor

This 4-day course covers preparation and delivery of sessions, course and centre management, powerboat handling in a teaching environment, RYA Sailing Schemes and the role of a Senior Instructor. Students will be assessed on a continual basis over the 4 days when running water-based simulated group management sessions. You will also be asked to demonstrate that you have sailing ability to pre-entry assessment standard.

This course is for experienced, qualified RYA Dinghy Instructors who have at least one year’s full time dinghy instructing experience
